Hi5 a Victim of Their Own Success

hi5

As a product of runaway growth sometimes comes growing pains.  Hi5 has been subject to a bit of that over the course of the last week; a week where, as Hi5 themselves put it, has experienced unprecedented traction. In the last month, third-party developers have launched well over 400 OpenSocial apps on hi5’s network. These apps have continued to have faster adoption rates than on other social networks, with the hi5 Platform averaging around a million application installs on a daily basis.

What’s even more impressive is the number of active user participation.  Around half of hi5’s 80 million members engaged with three or more installed apps. This is the sort of thing that continues to amaze me about this particular (and peculiar in many ways) social network - and something that is continually attributed to their uniquely international userbase.

This success hasn’t been without it’s fair share of headaches. Justin Smith over at Inside Facebook today took note of the downtime on the hi5 platform generated by an over-abundance of platform notifications:

“..Hi5 for a brief period turned off all platform notifications. However, Hi5 has since restored platform notification service to developers by making some changes to the way notifications work. Specifically, notifications are now processed asynchronously.  Hi5 will be continuing conversations with developers that are using notifications the most.”

Want to know the secrets to their success? The short version is that they just put together a really solid service and happened to quickly tap into a broad cross-section of countries.  The long version, you’ll have to check out the quick conversation I had with the Hi5 developers.
