The IPL Fan Club: A Social Network For Indian Cricket Fans

The IPL Fan Club, a social network built around Indian Premiere League Cricket, recently launched, and it is gaining users quickly.

While cricket never caught on much in the United States, at least as a professional-level attraction, in India it is something akin to a lifestyle. Just launched this year, the Indian Premiere League has garnered much coverage for the new theatrical aspects it has added to the game. The visitation of foreign cheerleaders is just one example. So it likely makes sense that the new league would met with the launch of a social network devoted to the sport’s national following.

As one would suspect, you can find all of the usual trappings of a social network in the IPL Fan Club, in that you create a user profile, add friends and so on, plus the bonus of declaring a favorite team and player. Only care to talk with people who support the Chennai Super Kings? No problem. You can just click on the club logo and be shown an index of people who have declared similar allegiance.

To spread the word of the new network, The IPLFanClub has been running a contest for the person who scores the most “runs”, the scoring system in cricket, to attend the finals of the inaugural season. You can get points by registering new members, getting comments on your profile, uploading photos (to get points, photos must be over 251×251 pixels in size), and more. Be warned: you can lose points for deleting photos or albums.

Considering the fervor for this game in India, this network is sure to be a success.
